The inaugural Speak Up, Stand up, Save a Life Conference was the brainchild of Dr. Lily Matos DeBlieux, Supt. of the Pendergast District along with colleagues Gina Godbehere Thomas and Jen Rogers, alumni from leadership West Class XXII. The Arizona Child Fatality Review Program annual report states young adult suicides have increased 81% since 2009 stating one factor is the stigma associated with asking for help. With this startling statistic, Dr. DeBlieux, and her team planned a conference for 1200 students and adults turning the stigma into an action plan with their inaugural student-led Youth Conference held January 26th, 2017 at ASU West. The conference brought students, police chiefs, government officials, parents and teachers together and provided the tools to take back to their schools with the goal to inspire the 50,000 students in their own schools to Speak Up, Stand Up and Save A Life.
