Early Learning

Learning Begins In The Earliest Years

Arizona’s education system is an interconnected continuum that spans Early Learning, K-12 and Postsecondary education. Each stage is critically important, building upon the one before and contributing to long-term student success. The better the continuum is aligned with respect to curriculum, standards and support for successful student transitions, the more likely we are to have graduates who are prepared for college, career and life.

Did you know?
  • Ninety percent of a child’s brain is developed by age three
  • Nearly 70% of children, birth to five, spend some portion of their day outside of the care of their parents
  • Children who are exposed to quality early learning experiences are more likely to read at grade level, graduate from high school and stay out of trouble with the law
  • Every dollar invested in quality early learning saves taxpayers $7 in futures costs associated with remedial education, criminal justice services and welfare programs.
  • Kindergarten teachers report half of entering students are not prepared to succeed
Early Learning is the first stage of the education continuum. With the ages birth to five regarded as the most critical in a child’s development, it is important for all Arizona children to have access to quality early learning opportunities. By nurturing the social, emotional and cognitive development of young children, quality early learning lays the foundation for success in school and beyond.

Arizona’s emerging early learning system is called First Things First. First Things First was created in November 2006, through the voter-approved Proposition 203, a citizen’s initiative designed to fund quality early childhood development and health programs across the state. The passage of the Proposition established a statewide entity and a Governor-appointed Board as well as a tax on tobacco, the major funding source, for statewide efforts. As a result, First Things First, with input from local communities, is designing a coordinated system of high-quality, easily accessible and affordable early learning programs and services for all Arizona children. Learn more about Early Learning in Arizona>>
