Education is the Key to Arizona’s Future: It’s Time to Expect More
{insert organization name} is a proud partner of Expect More Arizona and we are doing our part to spread the word about making education Arizona’s the best in the nation. Because it will take all of us to strengthen education in our state, Expect More Arizona has set out to create a movement of passionate, actively engaged Arizonans who are working to ensure our students graduate with the skills and knowledge necessary to compete, contribute and succeed in a 21st Century global economy.

The movement consists of a public awareness and engagement campaign that includes both multi-media public awareness messages and grassroots activities to encourage every Arizonan to support education. There are five easy things you can do right now to help make education Arizona’s top priority.

• Sign up for year-round communications at ExpectMoreArizona.org. It will keep you informed about what’s happening in education and present ongoing opportunities for you to get involved in strengthening education in our state.
• Let your friends know about Expect More Arizona and rally their support of the effort. You can forward information from the ExpectMoreArizona.org or request a speaker to speak to your neighborhood group, professional association, parent-teacher association or church group.
• Get actively involved in helping to strengthen education in our state by volunteering at a local school, running for a school board, mentoring students, helping the Expect More Arizona movement and more.
• Make a financial investment in education by taking advantage of state tax credits, supporting local teachers or investing in the Expect More Arizona movement.
• Raise your voice for education by voting for people, programs and policies that are supportive of education. This is an important election year. Make sure you are registered to vote and make sure you raise your voice when you cast your ballot. Expect More Arizona has a special Voter Section where you can get information about upcoming elections and learn more about how you can ensure your elected representatives are supportive of education.

As Arizonans, we want our state to be a great place to live, work and raise a family. To achieve this, we need to attract and retain top-level talent, high wage jobs and diverse industries that will fuel our economy and sustain a high quality of life. This requires a strong education system that effectively prepares our students to compete, contribute and succeed in a global economy.

Today, Arizona students are falling behind their national and international peers in academic performance, high school graduation rates and postsecondary degree attainment. And the gap is only widening between the preparedness of our graduates, and the skills and knowledge employers require. Although incremental change in student preparedness will deliver results for our students and our state, we need transformational change that opens the door to opportunities and ensures a highly-skilled workforce far into the future.

Arizona’s future leaders are in today’s cradles and classrooms. As other states and nations become more competitive and successful at producing high caliber talent, it’s more critical than ever to expect more of our own education system and the results it delivers. This begins with making education Arizona’s top priority.

Expect More Arizona is dedicated to increasing public awareness about the importance of making Arizona’s education system the best it can be – from birth through career. As a nonpartisan, nonpolitical partnership, Expect More Arizona has representatives from all segments of our community including: education, government, nonprofit, philanthropy and business.

The success of Arizona’s students to compete in a knowledge-based global economy is dependent upon the quality of the state’s education system. In order to improve our system, students must expect more, teachers must expect more, parents must expect more and our community as a whole must expect more. It is critical that each of us get involved in supporting education – it will take the entire community to work together to strengthen Arizona and ensure our students are prepared to succeed.

Three easy ways for people to get involved in improving education include the following:

• Get involved in local schools – Reach out to local schools or school districts to seek out ways to help. Many need help in the classroom, fundraising, organizing activities and other special projects.
• Be a voice for education – One key way to help strengthen education is to be actively involved in the voting process. Know the candidates and where they stand on education. Run for a school board or submit a letter to the editor of the local paper to share a pro-education opinion.
• Invest in education – In tough economic times, schools need support even more. It doesn’t have to break the bank either! Support teachers in the classroom with books, gift cards and other supplies or give directly to a school or the district foundation to support special programs and learning initiatives.

As Arizona schools are being challenged to do more with less, they need support and resources from the entire community to ensure our children are getting the education they need to succeed. Schools depend on parents, families and community members to raise money, volunteer in the classroom and provide one-one-one help to individual students.

There are many ways to get involved in strengthening education. From volunteering in a classroom to running for school board, you can make a difference! In addition to helping the school, research is now showing that volunteering in the classroom can give kids an academic boost. A study from the Department of Education found that when parents and other supportive adults are present in the classroom, the performance of all students tends to improve.

In addition to volunteering in a local school, you can also volunteer at education supporting non-profits such as Junior Achievement, Teach for America and Communities in Schools of Arizona. These organizations help provide support to the traditional classroom activities and help facilitate the learning of students. By volunteering in the classroom or with an education supporting organization, you are helping to provide a positive foundation for children as they transition through the education continuum.
